my gosh. thank you to all of you for the baby love. things are definitely getting more exciting around here. and will continue to. the list of things i want to sew for the akachan is growing. so far only one thing has been made. but i must say that the one thing has had me smiling for days.
i have been on the hunt for a map of japan. that i could get framed for the akachan's room. i want the little one to be constantly reminded of where his otosan (papa) just moved from. and the country and culture and language that will always be a big part of our lives. no matter where we live. here or there. well. i did not having much luck finding a map that i liked. then i saw this amazing little quilt. and got a great idea. why don't i just sew a map? it sounds much easier than it is.
i started with a map of japan that i found online. i drew a bunch of lines on it. measured those lines. and then used my math skills to enlarge the map so it was proportionate. i then used more math skills and made some pieces. i cut all the pieces out of red and white fabric, of course. thought it represented the japanese flag perfectly.
this is when things got complicated. it took one long day to complete the top. and if you didn't know any better you wouldn't know that hokkaido (the top island) should be a little to the right. i had a lot of fun quilting the waves on it and hand sewing the binding on. i hope the little one likes it as much his otosan and i do. and we are so excited to take the akachan to the land of the rising sun for a little visit.
The quilt is a great idea - I recognised what it was straight away!

hi!! i've been following your blog for a while, and am in LOVE with your japan quilt. i've been living in japan (fukushima prefecture) for the past three years and a close friend of mine will be leaving the country soon - i saw this, and thought it's perfect. so i'm in the attempt to make a map of japan pillowcase which i figure will be easy to pack and take along on her move. thanks for the inspiration! will link back with pictures once it's finished!
